Hayri Ögelman Madencilik A.Ş. Harmancık Chrome Plant is located approximately 6.5 km. northwest of Harmancık district of Bursa province. The 6,306.87 hectare licensed area includes underground and surface open pit mines, administrative buildings and a chrome enrichment (concentrate) plant. The high grade (lump) chrome ore, which constitutes the majority of the ore produced in the underground and surface open pit mines, is exported directly without any processing. Low-grade chrome ore is processed in the chrome enrichment plant and its grade is increased to chrome concentrate and a significant portion is exported.
In 2020, after the majority shares of Hayri Ögelman Madencilik A.Ş. were acquired by CVK Maden İşletmeleri San. ve Tic. A.Ş. in 2020, capacity expansion efforts were initiated for the underground mines and the chrome enrichment plant in the region. With the investments made, an increase in the production of raw ore was achieved within the scope of the project to connect the underground mines in the region with tunnels, and all machinery and equipment were renewed within the scope of the heavy maintenance and renovation project of the chrome enrichment plant and a daily feeding capacity of 1,000 metric tons was reached. As a result of these investments, 12,000 metric tons of direct saleable quality lump chrome ore can be produced monthly from the underground mines in the region and 3,000 metric tons of chrome concentrate can be produced monthly in the renovated chrome enrichment plant.
However, the plant operates intermittently since the existing production areas in the region do not produce enough low grade chrome ore to feed the chrome beneficiation plant continuously. During the periods when the plant is closed, the small amount of low grade chrome ore produced in the mines is accumulated in the feed area of the plant and the plant is restarted when the amount to feed the plant is reached. In order to increase the production of low grade chrome ore, new production areas have been planned and permit applications have been made. With the new investments, it is aimed to operate the chrome enrichment plant continuously and to increase the production amounts even further.
Magnesite ore is also produced along with chrome ore in the licensed area in Bursa-Harmancık region. With the increase in magnesite ore prices in 2022, which had low economic value in previous years, trial production was carried out and around 1,600 metric tonnes of magnesite ore was produced. With new investments, it is planned to sell 55,000 metric tonnes of magnesite ore per year starting from 2024.
